Bouldering memberships explained: contracts, cancellations
Bouldering membership contracts in Germany: minimum terms, notice periods, cancellation channels, and early exits. Know the fine print before you sign.
Joining a bouldering hall is a recurring contract; the fine print, which most people skip, decides how you leave. This guide explains the rules in plain language, with the published terms of four halls in Germany. Every term and price carries a September 2026 stamp. New to the sport? What you actually sign
Every bouldering membership contract runs on three settings: the term, the notice period, and the payment method. Most halls sell one of three shapes, which renew differently: monthly card, monthly abo, or prepaid annual card.
A fixed term runs a set number of months; an indefinite contract runs until either side cancels. Auto-renewal is where most cancellation problems start, because a missed deadline rolls the contract forward on its own. What German law allows since March 2022
For contracts signed after 1 March 2022, the notice period may be at most one month, per the Verbraucherzentrale. An initial term of up to 24 months remains lawful. After that term, the contract may only renew into an indefinite term with monthly notice. Older contracts may still renew for a fixed period, but never for more than one year.
Price increases follow the same logic as the term and the notice period. The hall needs a valid adjustment clause in its AGB, or the member’s consent. Without either, the original price stands, the Verbraucherzentrale explains.

The 14-day cooling-off right
Sign online and you can withdraw within 14 days. Sign at the hall and you have no cooling-off right. The withdrawal right (Widerruf) covers distance contracts: online, by mail, or by phone. It does not apply when the contract is signed in person at the hall, the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg explains. Boulderwelt’s AGB includes the statutory 14-day withdrawal policy for distance contracts. The clock starts on the day the contract is concluded.

What the halls actually offer
Contract models differ more than prices do. Boulderwelt ties its Monats-Abo to a three-month minimum, while urban apes runs an indefinite contract. Der Kegel sells prepaid passes in three lengths, from one month to a year.

The two ends of the table show the range. Boulderwelt’s Monats-Abo is the longest commitment of the group: three months minimum. Monthly notice then takes effect at the end of the following month, per its pricing page. urban apes, which runs Berlin’s Bright Site, signs memberships without a fixed term. Members cancel monthly with four weeks’ notice to the end of a calendar month, per its AGB. Der Kegel prices its annual pass at 480.00 euros for 12 months, prepaid, with reduced rates for students. Ostbloc sits between the two with a 65.00 euro monthly abo.
How cancellation actually works
The deadline is the day the gym receives your cancellation, not the day you post it. Most halls accept text form: a signed letter or an email. urban apes states cancellation by post or email and confirms receipt in writing. The consumer advice centres still recommend registered mail (Einschreiben). A confirmed receipt at the desk works too, which makes delivery provable.
Miss the window and the contract renews; that is where most lock-in complaints start. Climbers on r/AskGermany routinely ask whether they are stuck paying after a refused mid-term exit. Direct debits can outlive a cancellation: members on r/personalfinance report charges continuing months after a confirmed exit. That is community sentiment, not a measured statistic.

Early exits and pauses
Long-term illness with a medical certificate is the most reliable early exit. Relocation is not, unless the contract says so. Moving house is not a valid reason for extraordinary cancellation under German law, per the Verbraucherzentrale Bayern. The Federal Court of Justice confirmed that in 2016, when it ruled on a gym contract (case XII ZR 62/15).
A family doctor’s certificate stating that sport is no longer possible is enough. The gym may not demand a named diagnosis. Operator faults work the other way. If the hall causes the problem, such as water damage or a surprise fee increase, members may cancel extraordinarily. They must first give the operator a reasonable deadline to fix it, per Verbraucherzentrale Brandenburg.
Pregnancy is decided case by case, and some halls simply pause the contract instead. Before you sign: the checklist
- Minimum term: how many months must you pay before you can cancel?
- Notice period: how many weeks or months before the term end?
- Cancellation channel: is email accepted, or only signed post?
- Pause option: does the hall freeze the contract for illness or pregnancy?
- Price clause: can the hall raise the fee, and how do you object?
- Payment: is the fee drawn by direct debit, and how do you stop it?
- Stamp: is the price list dated, and when does it change?
Practical questions
Can I cancel if I move city?
A move is not a free exit under German law. Only a relocation clause in the contract grants one, the consumer advice centres explain. Ask before signing.
What if I get injured long-term?
Extraordinary cancellation works with a doctor’s certificate. The gym cannot demand that the diagnosis be named in it.
What about pregnancy?
There is no blanket rule. Boulderwelt pauses its Jahreskarte for 12 months with medical proof; other halls decide per case.
The gym keeps charging after I cancelled. What now?
Dispute the direct debit and keep proof of delivery, the advice repeated across cancellation threads. Text form plus a confirmed receipt settles most disputes.
